Boxofficemojo reports that March 2012 was the best March in the history of the US movie business with total reciepts of $940 million. That topped the previous "best March ever" in 2010 when the domestic box office take was $832 million. The surge in domestic box office was driven primarily by two films: "The Hunger Games" and "Dr Suess' The Lorax" which earned $420 million between them. What's interesting is that had Disney's "John Carter" performed even close to expectations we would be talking about a billion dollar March.
On the whole 2012 is shaping up to be a very promising year indeed with a slew of potential box office monsters lurking on the horizon. They include "The Avengers", "Prometheus", the third and final Christopher Nolan helmed Batman flick "The Dark Knight Rises" and Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey".
