"Iron Man 3" - the Shane Black directed 3rd installment in the adventures of Tony Stark - hauled in a gargantuan total of $175 million through Sunday giving it second place on the all-time opening weekends list behind only last year's "The Avengers". Throw in a mammoth second weekend overseas and IM3 has the 2013 summer season off to a rollicking start with a global box office total of $680 million in just 12 days of release. Seems all but certain at this point that the film will leap the billion dollar bar with room to spare setting itself up as the benchmark for the rest of the summer's slate to aspire to.
Top five all-time opening weekends:
1) The Avengers - 2012 |
$207.4 Million |
2) Iron Man 3 - 2013 |
$175 Million |
3) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II - 2011 |
$169.1 Million |
4) The Dark Knight Rises - 2012 |
$160.8 Million |
5) The Dark Knight - 2008 |
$158.4 Million |
