New "Wrath of the Titans" TV spot

While I wasn't a huge fan of "Clash of the Titans" from a couple of years ago I have to say that, like Gigi, I am stoked for this sequel. The trailer is awesome as is this new TV spot. I only hope they did a decent job on the 3D this time around.

"The Godfather" to return to cinemas for one day March 1

Salvatore Corsitto, James Caan and Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" - Paramount Pictures
A restored version of Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece "The Godfather" starring Marlon Brando will be returning to theaters for a single day on March 1st. It won't be in wide release, instead it will be shown on 55 Cinemark XD auditoriums nationwide.

It's not a 21st century film but it's so good it deserves mention. If you've never seen it on the big screen and you have a chance to catch it this time don't miss it.

Russell Crowe in talks to join Aronofsky's "Noah"

Multiple sources are reporting that Russell Crowe is in talks to join the cast of Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah" in the title role. Aronofsky's take on the bible tale will have Noah as a sort of ancient environmentalist disillusioned with mankind's stewardship of planet earth and determined to save its animal life. Should be interesting.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Helter Skelter"

Take one part Japanese director Mika Ninagawa ("Sakuran" 2006) add one part comely Japanese eye candy (Erika Sawajiri) and throw in a plot about addiction to plastic surgery and you have "Helter Skelter". Don't know exactly what they're saying but it sure looks great.

New "John Carter" clip

In this clip from Disney's upcoming sci-fi flick John Carter must do battle with the dreaded Martian White Ape. Personally I think this clip looks like it could have been lifted right out of "Attack of the Clones", but that just me.

"John Carter" arrives in theaters March 9th.

New image from the set of "Star Trek 2" shows new villian

The photo below from the set of the upcoming Star Trek sequel reveals an actor not previously reported to be attached to the project portraying an unknown villain. The actor turns out to be none other than Benedict Cumberbatch ("War Horse", "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") though exactly who in the pantheon of evil he is portraying is still not known. This photo, posted over at E, shows Cumberbatch succumbing to the power of Zachary Quinto's Vulcan Death Grip or Nerve Pinch or whatever its called.

"Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" - 2011

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is assigned to track down and stop a ruthless Russian scientist who's decided it's time for a global housecleaning. The wackjob in question wants to start a nuclear war in order that the world might come back stronger in it's aftermath. While infiltrating the Russian state archives in search of vital information Hunt is framed for blowing up the Kremlin and spends much of his subsequent time avoiding arrest by the bumbling Moscow police. He chases the rogue Rooskie scientist from Moscow to Dubai (where we get a pretty spectacular sequence on the outside of the Burj Kalifa) and from Dubai to Mumbai while the countdown ticks down to worldwide obliteration.

That's the basic premise of the newest installment in the Mission Impossible series. It's strengths are the strengths of any decent modern action movie: high production values, fantasy tech, well modulated action sequences, exotic locales and Bond girls, or Bond-type girls. It's weaknesses are the weaknesses of many a modern action movie: poorly crafted characters and extreme implausibility. Because of a surplus of the latter Ghost Protocol never really got off the ground for me and belongs more in the company of recent eye-rollers like "Columbiana" than alongside what I am increasingly coming to believe is the gold standard for 21st century actioners: Martin Campbell's "Casino Royale".

That movie proved once and for all that you can tell an implausible tale in a way that almost seems plausible and thereby allow the audience to relate to (and by extension care about) the characters. Achieving that plausability is a matter of knowing when to let up on the miracles and when to pull one out of the hat. Campbell understood this. Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird seems to have missed the memo. If Campbell's Bond didn't have this or that invaluable piece of tech handy he simply broke down the door and beat the crap out of whoever was on the other side. Not the MI team. Even when they're disavowed and the entire MI program shut down they still don't have to improvise, they just access a completely tripped out rail car in the middle of Moscow loaded with everything they'd ever need to do anything. Maybe I was the only one in the theater who groaned when this happened, I couldn't tell because my groan was so loud it drowned out just about everything else.

It's because of this kind of bullying of my suspension of disbelief that I was never able to invest in either the story or the characters. I just knew that when the chips were down they were never really down. Just wait a second and somebody will pull something no one has ever concieved of before, some situation-specific super tech, out of a briefcase and all will be well.

So I sat through the movie enjoying my popcorn a lot more than the story, appreciating the quality of the cinematography, appreciating that Jeremy Renner has a presence Tom Cruise can only dream of and trying to concentrate on the technical wherewithal required to pull off a scene like that which occurs on the exterior of the Burj, though I really didn't care one way or the other if Ethan Hunt plunged to the ground.

New "Wrath of the Titans" trailer

Perseus (Sam Worthington) ventures into the underworld to rescue Zeus (Liam Neeson) from the rampaging Titans.
In my humble opinion this looks absolutely awesome.

"Wrath of the Titans" is due in theaters March 30.

William Fichtner joins cast of "Lone Ranger"

Disney's attempt to get an adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" off the ground has had a troubled history but somehow still manages to move haltingly forward. According to Deadline the erstwhile production has now made a fairly major casting switch with William Fichtner joining the cast in place of a departed Dwight Yoakim. Yoakim reportedly had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts and Fichtner joins a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bohnam Carter and Tom Wilkinson.

The film is slated for a late 2013 release.

Sam Mendes "Skyfall" video blog

Sam Mendes has released the first in what I have to assume will be a series of video blog posts from the set of the new Bond flick "Skyfall". It's only a minute and a half long (which includes a few seconds of footage from the excellent "Casino Royale") but it's interesting nonetheless.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Zombibi"

Kyle Chandler set to join "Kill Bin Laden"

Kyle Chandler has signed on to join the growing cast of Kathryn Bigelow's film about the Navy SEAL team mission that killed Osama Bin Laden tentatively titled "Kill Bin Laden" (though that name is almost certain to change). Whatever it's ultimately called Bigelow's film is due to hit theaters December 19, 2012.

"The Woman in Black" - 2012

The Woman in Black is a well-crafted Victorian horror tale from Hammer Studios that confidently sets the appropriate throwback mood and lets the ghosts take it from there. It's also a movie particularly suited to Daniel Radcliffe's "I've-got-the-weight-of-the-world-on-my-shoulders" persona.

Radcliffe's character, Arthur Kipps, has been in a state of perpetual mourning since his wife died giving birth to the couple's son four years earlier. His sour puss has begun to weigh on his colleagues at the London law firm where he works and his boss gives him one last chance to snap out of it and deliver for the company or they're going to send him and his wet blanket packing. He's assigned to travel to a remote village to scour the home of a recently deceased widow for any and all personal documents that may have some bearing on the dispensation of the woman's estate.

The village itself is predictably Victorian-horror in its demeanor with lots of plain folk uttering ominous warnings and nary a sunbeam nor smile to be found. Kipps is eventually taken to the widow's house which sits atop an outcropping in the middle of an enormous swamp. The house is large and foreboding enough to be the summer home of Norman Bates' mom and inside is stuffed to the gills with mementos of happier days gone by now moldering under the weight of loss and regret.

Kipps finds it hard to concentrate on his assigned task given that the house seems to be hosting a lost soul jamboree and soon finds himself chasing shadows, walking nervously down dark hallways and staring out the windows at a woman dressed in black who seems to be casing the joint.

After his first day at the house he returns to town only to have a young girl die in his arms. He discovers that nearly everyone in town has lost a child in some horrible manner and that the town folk blame it on the lady in black and by extension on Kipps for waking her from her slumber with his presence in the house. The rest of the film slowly reveals who this mysterious woman is/was and exactly what her beef is with the world.

Director James Watkins certainly doesn't subscribe to the less-is-more school of horror. Indeed there's a ghost in every window and a restless spirit in every shadow. Still it all manages to work and there were a few instances during the film when I actually felt the proverbial chill run down my spine. I can't remember the last time I experienced that sensation in a movie theater. Nearly every note hit by the creative team is strong and clear with locations, art direction, sets, costumes, cast and effects all working seamlessly to transport us not only to another time and place story-wise but movie-wise as well. This is an old-fashioned haunted house movie that makes no apologies.

Watkins seems to have known just what kind of property he was working with in Daniel Radcliffe and how to utilize his talents for maximum effect. Radcliffe himself doesn't exactly have to stretch himself here but he does a fine job inhabiting his character and making us forget about that kid with the wand. (One of my complaints about the latter dozen or so HP movies was the fact that Radcliffe never was given a chance to lighten up. Here that heaviosity works like gargoyles on a Gothic cathedral.)

The ending was unexpected but can be said to have a certain poetic air to it that, after a few minutes of reflection, I came to accept and appreciate.

New trailer for Kevin McDonald's documentary "Marley"

Bob Marley died of cancer in 1981 but his music survived and thrived in the wake of his passing. A figure on the fringes of mainstream Western culture during his lifetime his renown has grown to touch virtually every corner of the world.

From the youtube blurb accompanying the trailer:

MARLEY is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international superstardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.

Marley hits theaters April 20.

"300: The Battle of Artemisia" casting contines

Little known actor Jamie Blackley has landed the role of Calisto in the Noam Murro directed "300" sequel/prequel "300: The Battle of Artemisia". Blackley will apparently play a young man who wishes to emulate his father's heroic deeds.

This announcement follows recent announcements that Sullivan Stapleton has been cast to play Themistocles and Rodrigo Santoro was in talks to reprise the role of Xeres from the first film.

The Dark Knight Rises... mobile food truck?

Well here's something you don't see everyday. Marketing for The Dark Knight Rises has taken to the streets (and the stomachs) of New York, with the appearance of an apparently authorized mobile chow station. Besides getting the word out on Christopher Nolan's hotly anticipated Batman swan song the truck's other function is apparently to serve the gastronomic needs of attendees at the New York Toy Fair which is currently underway.

The truck is emblazoned with a new image from the film, one that shows Batman's winged getabout, "The Bat" (could have used a little more brainstorming on that name but hey...).

Not sure how long the truck will be around or for that matter exactly what they're selling in terms of food for the masses but if Alfred cooked it, gimme two to go!

The Food Truck Rises.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Manborg"

I think the title just about says it all. Personally I think Michael Bay should call these guys and ask for some advice about how to turn a ridiculous premise into loads of fun.

Honest Abe brings his wagon-full-o-whoopass to theaters June 22.

Michael Bay confirms "Transformers 4"

After producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura ran off his mouth to MTV about the upcoming "Transformers" sequel(s) without studio approval Michael Bay found it necessary to release an after hours confirmation announcement yesterday stating that there will indeed be a "Transformers 4" and that it will be released in June of 2014. He also quashed talk of a Transformers 5 saying would be doing just the one movie at this time. Right now Bay and Steven Spielberg are said to be kicking around story ideas and have yet to hire a writer.

I know Chris could have lived just fine without another Transformers movie but I kind of enjoyed "Dark of the Moon" and I'm glad we're not finished with those big lovable city levelers just yet.

Ridley Scott on Harrison Ford and Prometheus sequel

Shooting down last weeks hot rumor director Ridley Scott in an interview with Entertainment Weekly basically said he hasn't heard anything about Harrison Ford playing Deckard in the proposed Blade Runner sequel. He then seemed to let his guard down a bit and suggest he's already thinking about a "Prometheus" sequel.

Here's part of the interview.

EW: Did you hear about the rumors online that you were supposedly in talks with Harrison Ford to be in it (Blade Runner sequel)?
RS: No. Don’t know yet. Don’t know yet.

EW: But you wouldn’t rule it out?
RS: Absolutely not. But I’m not sure that that’s going to be a story point, so I don’t know. But if it were, nothing would please me more. Honestly.

EW: But it sounds like you don’t even know yet if there would be a Rick Deckard character?
RS: No. I don’t know.

EW: So, right now, all there is is the concept of doing a Blade Runner film? Nothing more than that?
RS: Right. I just thought Prometheus was so enjoyable — returning to the world of science fiction was so fun — that I wanted to [go back to Blade Runner, too]. I’m also thinking about what the hell I might do for a Prometheus 2.

EW: Do you think there will be one?
RS: [Knocks the wood coffee table and grins]

"Chronicle" - 2012

"Chronicle", Hollywood's latest attempt to get over on us with faux "found footage", doesn't waste any time setting up ye olde revenge scenario that will drive the narrative in the film's 15 minute second hour.

Andrew is a loner, an outsider left to fend for himself by his dying mother. He's beat up by the bullies at school, chased by the local dropouts and, just for good measure, beat up by his father too. His eyelids have that red-along-the-edges look that show he spends most of his off camera time crying, no doubt alone in his room. One day he gets an idea: "My life is so boring and depressing I bet it'd make a really good movie!" So he buys an old video camera and begins to shoot everything. Which is really convenient for us since otherwise we wouldn't have a story to watch.

He's taken to a party by his cousin and there he meets a girl who's also videotaping everything for her blog and incredibly her footage finds its way into his in a way that creates perfect two point camera perspectives during conversations. I guess she must have one of those modern cameras that can do that kind of thing. You know, take over other cameras and impose itself on them in creatively meaningful ways.

Anyway after the party Andrew his cousin and a friend stumble upon a hole in the ground that leads them down to an alien craft/thingy. Contact with this alien craft begins to change them in bizarre and unexpected ways, essentially imbuing them with superpowers (though those powers emerge in a slow, compassionate and nurturing fashion so as not to overwhelm these sensitive youngsters). Remarkably, although they cultivate their emerging superpowers they don't feel the need to tell anyone about them, or even for that matter, have a single meaningful conversation about the fact that they found an alien spaceship/thingy in a hole in the ground.

In a nutshell the now superpowered youth spend a half hour or so honing their superskills by raising girls skirts, moving cars and even learning to fly. Alas, Andrew, with his deep seeded hostility born of endless bullying, decides the best thing to do is to use his new found powers to rain whoop ass down upon an unsuspecting Seattle and does just that.

It should be noted that the quality of this "found footage" is simply amazing. It displays none of the qualities that 100% of other (actual) home movies/found footage does (poor focus, camera pointed at the ground whenever something interesting is happening and shaking - good lord the shaking). It's as if they're walking around with steadcams perpetually strapped to their waists, and if that's the case, it's no wonder the kid gets harassed so much. "Hey, check out dorky dork with the hydraulic girdle! Hayuck hayuck!"

To be fair Chronicle is nowhere near as bad as the hopelessly lame, boring, laughable insult that is Paranormal Activity. Nor are the characters anywhere near as loathsome as those that infected Cloverfield and made that film enjoyable for all the wrong reasons. Chronicle has it's moments, (though none of them last very long), and as teen-revenge flicks go its not bad, even if it is painfully predictable.

But the 600 pound gorilla in the room simply refuses to go away and that is this: besides studios wishing to slash production budgets, undermine unions and increase their profit margins what possible reason is there to continue to exploit the already worn out "found footage" gimmick? None that I can see. "Chronicle" would have been exponentially better movie if they'd just made a real movie of it.

"Paradise Lost" cancelled

Director Alex Proyas
Legendary Pictures has scrapped it's planned "Paradise Lost" blockbuster after efforts to get the film's budget down to $120 million were apparently unsuccessful. Bradley Cooper was to star as Lucifer but is now free to pursue other projects. Alex Pryos (Dark City) was to direct. "Paradise Lost" joins a growing list of big budget productions that have failed to get off the ground lately including "The Lone Ranger" (which as to star Johnny Depp) and "The Dark Tower" (which Ron Howard was slated to direct).

New image from "Riddick"

The 3rd entry in the saga that began with 2000's excellent "Pitch Black" is currently shooting in Montreal. Here is part of the studio's recently released plot synopsis...

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless.  Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered.  The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal.  With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Harrison Ford to reprise his role in "Blade Runner"?

Twitchfilm is reporting that Harrison Ford is in the early stages of talks to return as Deckard in Ridley Scott's upcoming prequel/sequel to "Blade Runner". This is an interesting development for a couple of reasons. First, if Deckard was a replicant (as Ridley Scott is insisting these days), then how could they explain his getting really old? Second: Alcon head Andrew Kosove (Alcon owns the rights to any future Blade Runner projects) has stated publicly that he sees no place for Ford in any new Blade Runner film. Stay tuned.
