Digital Domain files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Founded by James Cameron the special effects house got off to an auspicious start doing effects for the director's "True Lies" and "Titanic" early on. Over the ensuing years it was attached to numerous other big budget films like "The Day After Tomorrow", "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", "Transformers" and more recently "Avatar" and "Thor". The bankruptcy filing comes as a bit of a shock as it was only 9 months ago that the company moved into a spacious new headquarters in Port St Lucie Florida. Last Friday (Sept 7th) though the company abruptly announced it was shuttering the new facility and laying off 300 workers there.

The announcement today also included news that Digital Domain will be sold to Searchlight Capital Partners for a reported $15 million and move forward "...to deliver all of our clients’ productions on schedule, on budget and at the highest degree of quality that they expect from Digital Domain."

according to new CEO Ed Ulbrich
