Effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen has died

I don't know about you but I was raised on Ray. His monsters fired my imagination and populated both my dreams and nightmares. His work represented the gold standard in special effects in the decades before Star Wars and films like "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" still stand up today as singular creations of genius. The list of his film accomplishments is a long one: "Jason and the Argonauts", "Clash of the Titans", "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad', "Mighty Joe Young", "It came from Beneath the Sea", "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and many, many more. Most movie makers would be happy to have one of those films on their resume.

While his method for creating special effects has largely passed into the history books the ability of his work to create wide-eyed attention has not. His obsessive dedication to his craft changed movies for the better and enriched my life, and the lives of countless others, in a way only the work of a true artist can.

Some tributes:

Robert Rodriguez: “Ray is the reason I became a filmmaker. He inspired me with his hands on, do it yourself filmmaking. Filled with imagination and painstaking craftsmanship. A treasure.”

Guillermo del Toro: "He was a true pioneer, a man who took the mantle of stop-motion and elevated it to an art form. Like all great monster makers, he worked almost single-handed. He was designer, technician, sculptor, painter and cinematographer all at once. To my generation, and to every generation of monster lovers to come, he will stand above all. Forever."

J.J. Abrams: “He was, obviously, a genius, infinitely ahead of his time. He inspired us all with his skill and imagination, and will be missed.”

George Lucas: “Without Ray Harryhausen, there would likely have been no STAR WARS”

James Cameron: “I think all of us who are practitioners in the arts of science fiction and fantasy movies now all feel that we’re standing on the shoulders of a giant. If not for Ray’s contribution to the collective dreamscape, we wouldn’t be who we are.”

Ray Harryhausen was 92.

New TV spot for "Man of Steel" ramps up the action

Up to this point most of the trailers/clips for Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" have focused on Clark's existential crisis but finally here in this new TV spot we get a sense of the film's action, and it looks pretty intense.

"Man of Steel" opens wide June 14th.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon"

UPDATE:The studio behind this piece of work has made a copyright claim and had the trailer pulled from youtube. If and when a replacement is available we'll have it for you.

Uh... what can you say about a trailer like this (other than the "Tomb of the Dragon" looks more like the "Lair of the Bear")?
How about "Why don't you consider letting them finish what they're saying before cutting away?" Maybe that's too much to ask.
How about this: "Dolf has to be pretty happy he has that "Expendables" gig."
I would imagine so.

"Iron Man 3" posts 2nd biggest opening weekend ever

"Iron Man 3" - the Shane Black directed 3rd installment in the adventures of Tony Stark - hauled in a gargantuan total of $175 million through Sunday giving it second place on the all-time opening weekends list behind only last year's "The Avengers". Throw in a mammoth second weekend overseas and IM3 has the 2013 summer season off to a rollicking start with a global box office total of $680 million in just 12 days of release. Seems all but certain at this point that the film will leap the billion dollar bar with room to spare setting itself up as the benchmark for the rest of the summer's slate to aspire to.

Top five all-time opening weekends:

1) The Avengers - 2012 $207.4 Million
2) Iron Man 3 - 2013 $175 Million
3) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II - 2011 $169.1 Million
4) The Dark Knight Rises - 2012 $160.8 Million
5) The Dark Knight - 2008 $158.4 Million

New "White House Down" trailer

Besides being a virtual carbon copy of the recently released "Olympus Has Fallen" this new trailer for "White House Down" begs the question: what exactly does director Roland Emmerich have against the White House?

Emmerich's "Independence Day" - 1996

Emmerich's "2012" - 2012

And finally Emmerich's soon to be released "White House Down".

Japanese trailer for "Pacific Rim"

Director Guillermo del Toro goes on the record regarding his influences and hopes for Pacific Rim in this trailer made specifically for the Japanese market.

"Pacific Rim" opens July 12th.

New "Man of Steel" TV spot

"Iron Man" (and his attendant box office success) was the obvious influence when it came to naming this film "Man of Steel" but the influences pretty much stop there. While Tony Stark is a smarmy, spoiled, self-important little jerk (not that there's anything wrong with that) Kal-el - aka Clark Kent - is his polar opposite: sober-minded, deferential, humble and self-sacrificing. In this new trailer we hear Jor-el (Russell Crowe) exhort his son to be the one thing Tony could care less about being: a role model.

Zach Snyder directs Crowe, Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon and Diane Lane in this Christopher Nolan production.

"Man of Steel" opens June 14th.

New trailer for "The Wolverine"

Everyone's going east it seems and that includes Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. In this new trailer ol' steelclaws is making enemies and kickin' booty all over the land of the rising sun. Fear not for the sideburned one however, he's looking buffer than ever and when you heal from life-threatening wounds in a micro-second you really don't have much to worry about.

"The Wolverine" arrives with his bad attitude apparently still intact on July 26th.
