Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Another"
Mom: "Before you go to bed dear I should probably tell you... your blood is dead and you're a murderous, bug-eyed, undead mutant. Sweet dreams!"

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Amerian Muscle"
Some guys do their time and rejoin society in a more or less orderly fashion. Some guys however, most certainly do not.
From the official blurb: (American Muscle) follows a recently paroled convict hell bent on revenge against those whom he holds responsible for his incarceration...including his own brother.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Run"
The burgeoning Cambodian film industry has apparently decided that zombies are the way to go and in "Run" they demonstrate that they've made a thorough study of undead cinema. Lots of frightened locals, drooling post-humans and snazzy visuals point to a lively, if not totally original, effort and hopefully also mean brighter days ahead for the Cambodian film industry.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Gun Woman"
Nudity and gun violence abound in this NSFW trailer for Mitsutake Kurando's "Gun Woman". Far as I can tell it's about guns and a woman who's almost always either partially or completely naked. Works for me.

I'll never look at curry quite the same way again.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day: "Escape from Tomorrow"
Shot on location at Disneyland this study in guerrilla film-making tells the tale of a middle-aged guy who loses his job and tries to escape all that implies by whisking the family off for some theme-park therapy. Unfortunately the theme park becomes little more than a launching pad into mental and emotional oblivion for him as it has been for so, so many others. Enjoy.
"Escape from Tomorrow" with hit VOD on October 11th.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Rabbit Woman" (Mujer Conejo)
Let's say you're shooting a film about a Chinese lady who lives in Argentina and has to flee Buenos Aires to avoid being targeted by a Triad. Said young lady winds up in the pampas and must now deal with an infestation of mutant bunnies. Let's say funds dry up before you complete your picture (though I can't imagine why that would happen). What do you do? My guess is that you animate whatever is left. Nobody'll notice anyway.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day: "Almost Human"
Mark disappeared in a flash of blue light, but now he's back and it seems the blue light therapy has had a somewhat negative effect on his ability to relate to other people.
Mark will be working out his issues at the Toronto International Film Festival in the near future.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Hell Baby"
It's not smart to ignore the legend. It's not wise to dismiss superstition. It's not at all advisable to stick around when da "b*tches be trippin!!!" cause it can only mean one thing: hell baby is on the way. "Yikes."
"Hell Baby" is due for release this September.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Zombie Shark"
Don't go near the shark tank! For god's sake don't go near the shark tank!!!!
He's a zombie. He's a shark. Maybe most surprising of all he climbs walls and hides in the bushes! Ultimately though he does what any self-respecting zombie/shark would do: he heads for the shark tank next to that PYT's lawn chair and reels her in with some rhythmic splashing.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "009-1"
The full name of this, uh, movie is actually the wonderfully meaningless "009-1 The End of the Beginning" and here's the equally meaningless blurb: "The story is set in a world where the Cold War never ended, and the
solitary cyborg agent 009-1 operates in the violent skirmishes waged
between the two factions. The live-action film will recreate not only
the manga's gun battles, but also 009-1's signature breast guns."
That's great (especially the breast guns and the fact that this cyborg seems more than a little bi-curious), but the Cold War was a standoff between the USSR and the US, not between different factions of the Japanese underworld but hey, I'm quibbling. Enjoy the mindless mayhem.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Cho Lon"
I'm not a huge fan of endless flying kicks or machete fights but the censors in Vietnam have banned this film so it's good enough for me. Because censors in Vietnam have the same kind of clout as the ones in Communist China banning this film in Vietnam means it's effectively banned worldwide. That's because Vietnamese law forbids films that have been banned domestically from being exported. So here's our Sunday middle finger to all censors foreign and domestic.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "The Act of Killing"
"I'm a winner!"
I beg to differ.
Official blurb: In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, The Act of Killing is an unprecedented film and, according to the Los Angeles Times, "could well change how you view the documentary form.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon"
UPDATE:The studio behind this piece of work has made a copyright claim and had the trailer pulled from youtube. If and when a replacement is available we'll have it for you.
Uh... what can you say about a trailer like this (other than the "Tomb of the Dragon" looks more like the "Lair of the Bear")?
How about "Why don't you consider letting them finish what they're saying before cutting away?" Maybe that's too much to ask.
How about this: "Dolf has to be pretty happy he has that "Expendables" gig."
I would imagine so.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "The Shadow Sea"
For this OTBTTOTD we're highlighting a film-noir project being put together by a friend of ours, Richard Chambers. Richard is a fellow artist and film maker who spends most of his time in Bangkok these days. The trailer here is a Proof of Concept piece created for the film's soon-to-be-launched indiegogo financing campaign. Shot guerrilla style utilizing only volunteers and donated equipment the trailer's a pretty good example of what a dedicated bunch of people can do when they put their minds to it. Check it out.
Brief synopsis: Past and present, east and west collide on the streets of Bangkok as a former Las Vegas hitman attempts to shine a light into the darkest corners of the city.
The indiegogo campaign will be up in a few days. In the meantime you can learn more about the film at its facebook page here.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "La Casa Triste (The Sad House)"
Wow. What a beautiful looking piece of work Guadalajara based Sofia Carrillo has crafted here. Apparently she uses objects found in flea markets and the like to create her films and achieve this incredible sense of frozen time. Amazing stuff.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Hentai Kamen"
What can you say about a guy who melds his inner crime-fighter with his inner pervert? I'm not sure. Maybe the official blurb will help:
Kyosuke Shikijo is a promising star of the high school kempo club, and he is in love with Aiko Himeno, a transfer student and everyone's idol. When Aiko is taken hostage by bank robbers one day, out of desperation to save her, Kyosuke manages to sneak into the bank, but puts on a pair of knickers in girls' changing room instead of a mask. In that instant, the perverted blood inside Kyosuke explodes and transforms him into Abnormal Superhero. He saves Aiko, and Abnormal Superhero is born. Kyosuke's sense of justice from his father, who was a detective and died in the line of duty, and the perverted blood from his mother, who was a sadomasochist, awakens his latent ability, transforming him into Abnormal Superhero with superhero power.
Well alright! Now that we've got that straightened out let's take a look at the official trailer.

Off the beaten track trailer of the day - "Chanthaly"
As horror films are the bread and butter of the Southeast Asian film industry it comes as no surprise that Laotian film makers would want to claim a seat at the table. And with "Chanthaly" director Mattie Do does just that, becoming at that same time the country's first female feature film director.
